And while Velasco-Favela never planned to open a women’s brewhouse, the opportunity seemed too perfect. Growing up in South Central Los Angeles, “Those streets were mean,” recalls Mr. Preciado in an article published by the Los Angeles Times. Enduring the troubling and discriminating inequities people of color face in ghettos, Mr. Preciado took solace in craft beer and its community. Olson will keep creating, brewing the way for the next generation of women to create their own beer. She has brewed at different breweries all over San Diego and even created some cider not too long ago. While Mujeres Brew House aims to empower women, it is not just for women.

We grew up with them, it’s a cultural thing, and it’s what we know. She is currently the head brewer at Mujeres Brew House, an all female-run and Latina-owned brewery. Besides inventing some of the most creative beers in Southern California, Olson and Mujeres are also creating a safe space for women and people of color to enjoy craft beer. According to co-founders Carmen Favela and Esthela Davila, Mujeres Brew House will be managed by women and for women with the intent of breaking down barriers of entry into the beer scene.

Women in Beer: Carmen Velasco-Favela of Mujeres Brew House

The brewery opened nine years ago in San Diego and co-owns Mujeres Brew House. Mujeres Brew House in Barrio Logan is providing women a space to be able to sell their tamales and take all their profits home, which they say nowadays during inflation is a big help. Favela said they hired a Mexican food truck to serve food at the brewery as they have a large outdoor space that allows Mujeres Brew House to fully operate outside. “I started painting the wall this Mexican pink; it was so bright but I loved it,” Velasco-Favela said. Once we had this space, the next step was trying to learn how to stabilize and operate a brewery.

Women in Beer: Blanca Quintero of Highland Park Brewery

Each of the three brewing companies will add to the diverse Latinx landscape offering beer, food, music, and aesthetics reminiscent of traditional, contemporary, and postmodern Latinx culture. "We start with the history of craft beer in San Diego and make a beer along with women," Favela said. She said that due to the overlying history of adversity for women, this project was going to be tricky. However, the two partners both say that the biggest challenge with this brewery is not to think about that. Despite the accelerated timeframe, Davila and the Favelas crystallized their vision to capture what they saw as an unmissable opportunity. The Favelas also pledged to provide a percentage of all sales to fund Mujeres’ training programs and special events.

But one brewery in Southern California is bringing women back into the brewhouse and into the front for that matter. At Mujeres Brew House, they’re reclaiming that title of women as the original brewers. Border X Brewing is a brewery that offers craft beer inspired by classic Mexican flavors.

Since then, Edgar has amassed over 16,000 followers on Instagram where he posts chugging videos and brewery trips. He would go on to collaborate as a contract brewer with Death Row Records, BeerAdvocate, Beer Zombies Brewing Co., Crowns and Hops Brewing Co., King Brewing Co. and 8Bit Brewing Co. “We have been buying our supplies for our tamales and we have noticed a decrease in sales, and it is impacting us financially because we have to put the money upfront,” said Maria Cadenas, owner of Mi Cocina Carrillo. “We’re helping each other find our voice and stand out in a crowd of bearded brewers,” she said with a laugh. Olson recently created an Ube Double IPA that was purple, in honor of the late singer Selena, as well as a Tamarindo Hefeweizen.

Community tables fill the space, with a mural celebrating street vendors and artwork from the Boyle Heights community arts center Self Help Graphics & Art. Mr. Preciado began his venture into the craft beer industry in 2018 after he recorded a video of him chugging a triple, hazy IPA from Monkish Brewing on a drunken night. Prefacing the chug with a raunchy quip, the video on Instagram would end up garnering thousands of views. It was at that moment that Mr. Preciado realized an opportunity to change his life.

Your going to have to take a nice walk every time you want more drinks. Favela and co-founder Estela Davila, who serves as tasting room lead, eventually branched out from the club to create Mujeres Brew House. However, she received a lot of support from the women's club and several families who told her that they were excited about the reopening. Opening their own establishment where they could serve craft beer is a dream they had been planning for months and almost did not see come true. A group of enterprising Latinas decided to open a brewery in the middle of the pandemic in Barrio Logan and make history. This project was produced by Priscilla Maldonado as a published learning experience in JMS 550 Digital Journalism, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Program at San Diego State University.

The city’s proximity to Mexico (downtown San Diego is located approximately 14 miles north of the border) has allowed cross-border collaborations and influence to thrive. But despite profiting from these culturally rich assets, San Diego’s 150-plus breweries, as in the rest of the United States, remain largely white male-owned and operated. The vision behind Mujeres Brew House is about providing balance to this skewed community.

“A lot of times when people think about Southern California, they think of the cities. (Bell, CA) –  Edgar Preciado (@BeerThugLife), founder of BeerThugLife LLC., announces the official opening of Beer Thug Brewing Co. in the city of Bell, CA. Mr. Preciado will be opening a brewery and taproom via an alternate proprietorship with Border X Brewing located at 4400 E Gage Ave, Bell, CA 90201. “I think when women come together into space, we're just stronger. Not only are we inviting, tamaleras, but we're also promoting them,” said Carmen.

She said she joined because she saw the lack of Latinos and women of color in the craft beer industry. Mujeres Brew Club (MBC) is a monthly beer education group primarily geared toward women (although its founders remain adamant that it’s a space for everyone). Meetings are held at both Border X’s Barrio Logan location as well as at its satellite location in Los Angeles. “We started Mujeres Brew Club in 2019 and that was an educational series to empower Latinas who drink craft beer already,” said Carmen Favela, owner and co-founder. SAN DIEGO – A brewery in Barrio Logan owned and operated by two Latinas is on a mission to inspire more women of color to make their name in the craft beer industry.
