The two agreed that women’s empowerment would be their main goal with the brewery, but the two knew there would be struggles. Going into fall, it is going to be a great time to continue and scale up our educational program. We are planning an internship program so women can be behind the scenes of beer. We wanted to make a really strong beer that could be the base for our beer cocktails. Out of that evolved a margarita that we make out of the base of the beer. We have customers in here that don’t drink beer, but they love margaritas.

The beer list grew from flavors that reminded them of their childhood to ones that are a staple in Latin cultures, such as tamarindo. Tamarindo is a sweet and spicy candy that is popular in the Latino community. The brewers have been able to incorporate that into a beer that is now a fan favorite at the brewery.

The club would bring in speakers to talk about the history of beer and how to make it. The club was only meant to be an educational series, but it ended up lasting six months. This event would sell out, making Velasco-Favela and Davila aware that women are very active in the beer community. We started marketing the project before we could even serve beer. And it wasn’t just getting our club members involved, but the community too.

Making and enjoying tamales this time of year is a family tradition for many San Diegans, but for those selling tamales, there can be a lot of hoops to jump through to get the proper permits from the city. So, a local brewery is teaming up with local tamaleras to help them make sure their tamales end up on your table this holiday season. Garcia is part of the Pink Boots Society, an organization that helps women and non-binary individuals move up through the ranks of the beer industry through education, encouragement and inspiration. She believes the value diversity brings to the industry goes way beyond the flavors they create.

Since then, they’ve been pouring every Tuesday through Sunday, with events like Thursday Loteria Nights, a Sunday farmers markets hosted by Garden Unidos, and pop-ups featuring local vendors. The first beer that Mujeres Brew House brewed was meant to be a lighter beer that even non-beer drinkers could enjoy. They were able to do just that through Buenas Vibras, a blonde ale that was easy to drink. Velasco-Favela and Davila did not initially plan to open the brewery when they did, but the space became available and everything slowly fell into place.

The brainchild of Carmen Velasco-Favela, the all female-run and Latina-owned brewhouse opened its doors on July 1st, 2020. Since then, the brewery has been reimagining the stereotypical gender and race of the craft beer industry. Brenda Gomez, a lead bartender for Mujeres, joined the team when the brewery first opened its doors.

Re-writing the Narrative: The Origins of Mujeres Brew House as a Women’s Beer Club

I had been working in the front of the house but didn’t really know what it was like brewing beer behind the scenes. An all female-run and Latina-owned brewery, Mujeres Brew House was established in July 2020 by Carmen Velasco-Favela to offset the lack of female representation in the craft beer industry. “They’re not conforming to the industry,” says David Favela, co-founder of Border X Brewing and Velasco-Favela’s partner in business and life. Never in my dreams did I ever think, “Oh, someday the club would have a brewery.” The building owners were ecstatic to think women would take over the space and continue our educational series. So now we have a brewhouse and take the whole experience to a whole nother level. The place was literally turnkey, so everything was already here and so fortuitous.

SAN DIEGO — Talk to Samantha Olson for five minutes, and you’ll realize right away how much science and love she infuses into each beer she brews. “When I grew up here it was very rough, a lot of gang activity, a lot of violence,” she told FOX 5. Davila grew up a block from where the brewery is now located on Julian Avenue in Barrio Logan. Mujeres Brew House is the only artisanal brewer by women for women in San Diego, so these Latina entrepreneurs hope to inspire others as they say there is nothing that women cannot achieve. Carrying out has not been easy, let alone in the midst of the pandemic, as they do not know what will be the future for small businesses.

Street vendors' permits, especially when it comes to food could be expensive, but according to Logan Heights CDC, selling them on the street without it could be even more expensive. That's why they offer free workshops to help locals apply for permits and events where they can sell their products and food without the need for a permit. Starting Tuesday, Dec. 6, Maria and more tamaleras will be able to sell their tamales at Mujeres Brew House without paying extra fees. It is pretty strange that the lounge area is separated from the bar though.

The space is painted in bright pink and blue colors, and murals of women line the walls. One of the reasons she came to Mujeres is because she wanted to empower more women. She wasn’t treated fairly and had different obstacles when getting into the industry, so she knows how important it is to create a space to empower women and give them an opportunity to get the experience they need.

Little by little, I took on more responsibility at the brewery, and I became very passionate about celebrating our culture through craft beer. The beers that Border X makes are the kind of beers that I had no idea you could make. In either 2017 or 2018, we were doing market research to try and figure out who our customers at Border X were, and we realized that the majority of customers were actually women.

The art that fills the walls was painted by local female artists. The main mural that fills an entire wall in the tasting room was created by España Garcia. She created the “Beer Goddess.” The crown that sits on the woman’s head is made of hop; the flower beer is made from. The spikes sticking out of the crown are barley and her hair is water. The muralists later incorporated Aztec markings on the woman’s face to incorporate the cultural aspect of the brewery. The Mujeres Brew Club was created to encourage women to learn more about beer.

I enjoy my Latina palette, and the beers we are making are for that audience. When we started this project, my goal was to create things that no one else was doing. We started doing beer cocktails, we have a michelada bar downstairs that has 30 toppings because that’s how you get it in Mexico.
